Spalding - River Welland

The historic town of Spalding, sited on the River Welland, Lincolnshire, appeared in the Domesday Book of 1066 as Spallinge.

Surrounded by fenland, it is a peaceful market town where the grand Georgian terraces and buildings that flank the river indicate its past importance as a major trading centre. Famous for the growing of tulip and daffodil bulbs, its Flower Parade in early May attracts around 100,000 visitors each year.

Historically, its economy has been based on agriculture and food production and today around 60 per cent of the workforce is employed in food creation, procession or distribution. The town, which has a population of around 23,200, also houses the headquarters of South Holland District Council.

The town has more than 270 shops and businesses, both independent and nationally known names, which are complemented by traditional Tuesday and Saturday markets.
